Research Expertise

Description

My core research aims to advance the field of digital health across 4 key interlinked areas, as follows: 1) By understanding and improving the effectiveness of digital interventions to support delivery of single and multiple chronic disease (multimorbidity) models of person-centred integrated care (with a focus on older adult populations). 2) By understanding and enhancing user engagement with digital interventions through the application of behavioural science, health psychology theories and person centred design. 3) By advancing the role of digital health interventions to de-centralise integrated care to the community. 4) By understanding best practices for trialling/implementing digital health interventions in relation to development stage and regional and organisational preparedness. The majority of this work above has been advanced through the development and evaluation of the of the ProACT platform via the EU Horizon 2020 project ProACT (www.proact2020.eu - role Coordinator). ProACT has now been successfully implemented in 4 trials across 3 countries (Ireland, Belgium, Italy) via 2 grants (H2020 and the Sláintecare Integration Fund) Outcomes from these recently completed trials will be published from 2020 with a 5th trial due to start in Belgium in the summer 2020. My future research aims to build on the above, evolving the ProACT platform and associated technologies to account for new diseases and populations. Presently I am working with teams across the EU to achieve this (with new projects to commence in 2020) as well as develop new digital tools to assess organisational and local/regional specific readiness for transferability and scalability of digital integrated care solutions. These tools we hope will enable healthcare policy makers and organisations evaluate the impact of potential solutions to support disease management and integrated care processes. Further to the work above, I also have research interests in the role assistive technologies can play to support individuals with intellectual disability and autism. In collaboration with the ALL Institute (NUIG), DOCTRID Institute and World Health Organisation GATE (Global Cooperation on Assistive Technology) my focus has been on understanding international barriers and facilitators to assistive technology access/use for people with intellectual disability and autism. This work wil be advanced from 2020 via a new COST ACTION.

    • Personalised Support for Reconciling Health and Wellbeing Information of Varying Complexity and Veracity Towards Positive Behavioural Change
  • Summary
    • This PhD project will introduce a new approach to visual scrutability that can facilitate users in examining complex and sometimes conflicting information, specifically in the context of personal health-care, towards changing behavior to improve their health. This research will examine how scrutability, an approach to facilitating the inspection and alteration of user models that underpins a system's interaction with a user, may provide a means for empowering users to interact with such difficult to reconcile information in order to promote behaviour change. Defining a new approach that will enable users to reflect upon and control what information they consume in a personalised manner is proposed as a key element in fostering enhanced understanding of their own health-care and wellbeing. This PhD will build on results from the H2020 Provenance and ProACT projects.

    • ProACT (http://proact2020.eu - Dr. Dinsmore Project Coordinator)
  • Summary
    • Website: http://proact2020.eu ProACT (Integrated Technology Systems for ProACTive Patient Centred Care) is an EU-funded Horizon 2020 project in PHC-25-2015. ProACT targets Europe's 50 million multimorbid patients to proactively self-manage and offset the EU's annual €700 billion cost of chronic disease management. ProACT aims to develop and evaluate an ecosystem to integrate a wide variety of new and existing technologies to improve and advance home-based integrated care for older adults with multimorbidity, including associated co-morbidities. The ecosystem will connect four key care and support models central to understanding and implementing effective, continued and coordinated patient centric care (including self-management). These models are 1) homecare (including informal care); 2) hospital care; 3) community and social care and 4) social support networks. Trial sites in Ireland and Belgium will use Living Lab facilities to ensure co-design of ProACT technologies, and implement proof of concept trials involving national health services, patients and their formal and informal care networks. Clinical status information, therapies and activity tools will be deployed for the conditions of: chronic heart failure (CHF), diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Tools to support mild cognitive impairment and detect early onset dementia are included. Commercial potential will be validated during the project supported by a European feasibility study in Italy to assess the cultural and political determinants for adoption and scalability of the ecosystem.

ASSISTID is the first structured research programme of its kind in Europe and the most significant investment into assistive technologies research to date. Assistive Technologies refers to practical tools that can support the functional needs of people who experience difficulties associated with disability or ageing. The ASSISTID programme which will fund 40 post-doctoral fellows is co-funded by the European Commission and the charity RESPECT, and is coordinated by the DOCTRID Research Institute. The DOCTRID Research Institute includes the Daughters of Charity Disability Support Services, all of the universities on the island of Ireland, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, and the US universities Michigan State University and the University of Massachusetts. This is the first time that all of the universities on the island of Ireland have joined together in an EU funded research consortium.
