Re-imagining healthcare for children and adolescents with diabetes due to the impact of COVID

Current guidelines emphasise that the paediatric diabetes service needs to be patient-centred, adolescents need to be empowered to manage their diabetes and providers should promote self-management. This seminar will provide an overview of the PACE study (Promoting Adolescent Communication and Education): developing and evaluating an intervention to improve youth question-asking and provider education during paediatric diabetes visits. This seminar will explore how consultations have changed since COVID; the advantages and challenges of these changes and the impact on adolescent engagement.

Supporting parents to understand children's behaviour

Every behaviour has meaning' and when children are limited in terms of language, their behaviour becomes the way in which they communicate emotion. Therefore it is crucially important to help parents interpret their child's behaviour for what they are trying to say. This seminar will explore behaviours that are commonly mis-interpreted and offer possible explanations that will increase parent's understanding of their children's emotional lives. Where language fails, behaviour takes over. If you engage with behaviour sometimes you win and sometimes you lose, but when you engage with the child, you achieve a win, of sorts, every time.
